I found my niche for writing in high school, inspired by the encouragement of my senior year English teacher, Mrs. Barlow. Unfortunately, I would not give my talent proper attention until my sophomore year at Norfolk State University when I switched my major from biology to English. Since then, I’ve been operating in my specialty, helping others to find their voices, and acknowledging that just under God’s power ranks the power of words.
After graduating from Norfolk State University, I started my extensive career as a secondary school English teacher and earned my Master’s degree in English from Bowling Green State University. I taught English for 16 years, after which I found my place in the practical application of wordsmithing as a technical writer.
Technical writing has provided me with more free time than I ever had as a teacher. With this newfound time, I am co-creating the Family Functions podcast; enjoying spending more time with my husband and best friend, Jason, and our children, Laila and Langston; volunteering with my sorority, the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®; watching true crime television; and building my business by helping scholars and professionals create documents that convey their messages to the world.

I have been a professional musician since my teenage years, working in the music ministries of various churches. Upon graduation from high school, I ventured to Hampton University where I obtained my Bachelor of Science in music with a concentration in music engineering. After attending Hampton University, I continued to work as a minister of music for several years; however, in 2019, I started to feel stuck.
That feeling pushed me to pursue my Master’s degree in counseling at Hampton University, which opened the door for me to leave music ministry if I so desired. Around the same time, however, I secured a new position as a Worship and Production Director which renewed my passion for creative arts in ministry.
The 2020 pandemic and subsequent shutdown forced my employer to establish an online presence, and I was tasked with making it happen. It was this challenge that initiated the development and cultivation of my skills in video production, social media content development, and live streaming. Since honing my video production skills by necessity, I have been able to venture into other areas, providing videography services for special occasions, creating tribute videos, and filming online pre-production.
Utilizing my specialized training, I also produce numerous radio shows and podcasts, including The Crew (formerly The Pastor’s Study), The Lyons’ Den, Sunday Brunch, and my own Family Functions.
I am married to the love of my life, Michelle, and we have two children, Laila and Langston. In my downtime, I love spending time with my family, listening to jazz, and watching WWE.
